What can I expect with Rock Guitar Lessons?

You can expect lessons that are comfortable, direct, and built around the music you actually care about. I’ll listen to you play, talk through your goals, and help diagnose what’s getting in your way, whether that’s technique, timing, tone, confidence, or not knowing what to practice next. The goal isn’t to force you through random scales or exercises, but to help you understand how to actually play the instrument better and connect that progress to the songs, riffs, and artists that made you want to play in the first place.

What genres do you specialize in?

I specialize in rock and metal guitar, but My goal is to help you play the music you love. Classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, modern metal, punk rock, progressive, or somewhere in between, the lessons are built around the music that makes you want to pick up the guitar. If you want the tight rhythm playing, heavy riffs, tone, feel, timing, and riffs of Metallica and Tool, I’ve got you covered. But from Van Halen, to AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, Green Day, System of a Down, Opeth, Bullet for My Valentine, The Strokes, or whatever band inspires you, the goal is the same.

What are the benefits of taking guitar lessons online?

Accepted Answer

Online lessons let you learn from the space where you already practice, using your own guitar, amp, pedals, chair, and setup, without losing time to travel or packing gear in and out. We can still work face-to-face, talk through your goals, watch your technique, hear your playing, and use camera angles to look at the fretting hand, picking hand, or full guitar. As long as you have a decent internet connection and a quiet enough space, online lessons can still be personal, focused, and highly effective.

When can I schedule my lessons?

Rock Guitar Lessons are online only, which makes scheduling more flexible and removes travel/setup time. Most students reserve a regular weekly or biweekly lesson time so there’s consistency and steady progress, though single lessons may also be available. When you request a lesson, we’ll work out availability from there; I’m based in Mountain Time, and the goal is to find a time that works while keeping lessons consistent enough for you to actually improve.

How should I prepare for my first lesson?

Accepted Answer

Have your guitar, picks, tuner, cable, camera, Zoom setup, and whatever amp or gear you normally use ready to go. Try to tune your guitar beforehand if you can, but we can go through it together if needed. The biggest thing is to come in with some idea of what you want from lessons, even if it’s rough: artists you like, songs you want to play, what feels frustrating, or what kind of guitarist you want to become. You don’t need to impress me; just come as you are.

What will our first few lessons look like?

The first few lessons are about figuring out where you are, what you want, and where your problems originate. I’ll listen to you play, learn what music you care about, and start diagnosing what is either helping or holding back your sound. From there, we’ll focus on one or two important fixes at a time and connect them to something musical whenever possible, so you get real progress without feeling overwhelmed. The goal is to give you direction, early wins, and a clear path toward the kind of guitarist you want to become.

What if I need to reschedule?

Life happens, and I understand that. I ask for at least 24 hours of notice whenever possible so we can adjust respectfully and keep lessons running smoothly. If you’re sick, have an emergency, or something unavoidable comes up, I’ll do my best to work with you. Consistency matters if you want to improve, but I also want to be human and flexible with students who communicate honestly.

What if I’ve tried lessons before and they didn’t help? How are your lessons different from other guitar teachers?

A lot of lessons either go too rigid, forcing scales, theory, and exercises that don’t connect to your goals, or they go too loose, where every lesson is just “what song do you want to learn?” without actually helping you improve. My approach sits between those: we keep the lessons connected to music you love, but we also diagnose what’s happening in your playing and fix the technique, timing, tone, and strategy behind it. If I give you an exercise, I’ll explain why; if we learn a riff, I’ll show you how to actually play it well, not just where the notes are.

Do you work with beginners, or only intermediate players?

I work best with students who genuinely love music and are serious about learning, whether they’re beginners or intermediate players. I work most often with intermediate players who know what it feels like to be stuck, but beginners are absolutely welcome! If you’re brand new, we’ll go over the fundamentals of playing the instrument and build from there, always connecting your progress to the music that made you want to play in the first place.

What if I’ve been stuck for years? What if I feel like I’ve hit my limit as a guitarist?

Being stuck for years does not mean you’ve hit your limit. Most of the time, it means you’ve been missing direction, diagnosis, or the right strategy for how to practice. A lot of players can “play the notes” but still feel sloppy, uncomfortable, or disconnected from the music, and that usually comes down to things like picking, fretting, timing, tone, or not knowing what to listen for. My job is to help find what’s blocking you, give you a clear path forward, and connect your practice to music you actually care about.
